Métiers en communication graphique

Management / Customer Service

Art Directors
Art directors are responsible for determining communication objectives and project fundamentals with the customer. After these are established, they create visual artwork, estimate production costs, and assign tasks to the individuals involved in the production (graphic artists, photographers, illustrators, and writers). Throughout the course of production, they ensure that the original concept is adhered to and that the project will meet the customer’s deadline.

Buyers
Buyers are in charge of acquiring supplies (inks, solvents, varnishes and finishing products, cardboard, paper, blankets, plates, plastic film, paste, staples, etc.) with the objective to maintain the factory’s optimal production capacity, at the best quality/price ratios. They may also be responsible for the acquisition of new equipment and the negotiation of outsourced contracts with companies specializing in services other than those offered by their employer.
Customer Service Managers
Customer service managers are responsible for establishing, as well as improving, company policies related to customer service. They hire and train project managers and their teams, guiding them in developing work methods to monitor projects in the best way possible.
Print Project Managers/ Customer Service Coordinators /CSR
All three groups are responsible for the step-by-step planning of a printing project and of the resources and materials required. They also ensure that production steps and schedules are respected.
Printing Managers
The role of printing managers is to plan, organize, direct and control all company activities in a way that optimizes the use of human, physical and financial resources. They are also responsible for the company’s department managers reporting to them.
Production Managers
Production managers are responsible for preparing and managing production budgets, analyzing differences between estimated and actual production costs, and approving purchase requests. They are in charge of planning and coordinating production, and supervising production quality control. They are also responsible for production teams.

Project Evaluators
Project evaluators estimate what it takes to obtain printed products for a certain project, and from there calculate the production costs involved (relating to people, time, and supplies).
Quality Coordinators
Reporting to the production manager, quality coordinators are responsible for reviewing and maintaining the quality system and for improving it. They are also responsible for ensuring that the company’s environmental program complies with corporate policies, government regulations, and ISO norms.
Sales Managers
Sales managers are primarily responsible for establishing the company’s promotional strategy and planning the sales activities for the teams of sales representatives and project evaluators reporting to them. They are also responsible for hiring and training members of those teams.

Sales Representatives
Sales representatives open new markets and close deals. They sell printing products and inform clients about those products.
Scheduling Managers
Scheduling managers make sure that each project is completed within the planned time schedule.

Graphic Design

Graphic artists/technicians
Graphic artists/technicians are responsible for producing and assembling the project’s design elements using the graphic designer’s artwork and specifications.
Graphic Designers
Graphic designers create concepts that blend aesthetics and communication. They express in images and words the messages that their customers wish to convey.

Prepress Activities

Colour Managers
Colour managers are responsible for verifying that the colours being used correspond to the pre-established graphic chart, which is based on specifications and selected profiles.
Prepress CG Designers / Photolithographers /Prepress Technician
Prepress CG designers, photolithographers and prepress technicians are responsible for verifying and correcting computer files; for performing necessary impositions as indicated in the production control records and according to the selected print method; and for producing and verifying the document proofs before printing. They prepare films, plates and other supplies required to carry out the printing job.
Print Production Supervisors
Print production supervisors oversee the work with a focus on productivity objectives and quality. They verify and approve proofs, coordinate the tasks of employees reporting to them with those of other departments, are involved in problem resolution, prepare production reports, and recommend improvements to the processes.

Printing – Rotary Press

Assistant rotary press operators (in charge of paper rolls, stacking, machine feeding)
Assistant press operators help senior press operators in setting up, adjusting, and maintaining a rotary offset printing machine, and in ensuring the adequate availability of supplies (ink, paper and fountain solution). They carry out tasks detailed in the production control records.

Assistants - in charge of stacking
These assistants are responsible for removing the printed material from the printing machine and piling them onto skids.

Assistants - in charge of feeding
These assistants are responsible for placing the paper sheets on the feeder table, aligning them and adjusting the margins and register.

Assistants - in charge of paper rolls
These assistants are responsible for handling printing paper rolls.

Rotary press operators /Printing machine feeders (3rd grade)

Rotary press operators (1st grade)
Printing press operators are responsible for adjusting, operating and maintaining printing machines, either manually or electronically by computers. They set up the machines according to instructions in the production control records. They also coordinate the work of the assistant press operators.

Printing – Sheet-fed press

Press operators (3rd grade) - 2 colours (2 blankets)
Press operators (2nd grade) – 4 colours or more
Press operators (1st grade) – 4 colours or more
Printing press operators are responsible for adjusting, operating and maintaining printing machines, either manually or electronically by computers. They set up the machines according to instructions in the production control records. They also coordinate the work of the assistant press operators.

Printing – Screen printing

Assistant press operators – automated screen printing press
Assistant press operators are responsible for helping the operators with adjusting, operating and maintaining an automated screen printing machine. They carry out tasks detailed in the production control records.

Printing press operators are responsible for adjusting, operating and maintaining printing machines, either manually or electronically by computers. They set up the machines according to instructions in the production control records. They also coordinate the work of the assistant press operators.

Printing – Flexography

Assistant press operators- Flexography
Assistant press operators are responsible for helping operators with adjusting, operating and maintaining flexographic printing press machines. They carry out tasks detailed in the production control records.

Printing press operators are responsible for adjusting, operating and maintaining printing machines, either manually or electronically by computers. They set up the machines according to instructions in the production control records. They also coordinate the work of the assistant press operators.

Printing – Digital printing

Digital Press Technicians / Digital Press Operators
Digital printing technicians and operators are responsible for setting up the printing system and for colour calibration. Before proceeding to the printing, they check the customer’s computer files and handle all necessary corrections according to specifications kept in the production control records.

Finishing-Binding/Complementary processes

Operators – Complementary processes (hot stamping, embossing, debossing or die-cutting)
These operators are responsible for a number of other finishing procedures, such as hot stamping, embossing, debossing and die cutting, which are used to give a special final touch to high-end products.
Operators - Inserting and saddle stitching machines
These operators are responsible for setting up the equipment according to the format of the documents to be bound, to the characteristics and speed of the equipment, and to the required level of quality.
Operators- Automatic Folding and Pasting machines
These operators, usually assisted by two helpers, are responsible for the settings of the equipment and for ensuring the proper feeding of cardboard to the machine. They are also responsible for receiving shipping boxes and wrapping supplies.
Operators- Folding machines
These operators are responsible for setting up the machines according to specifications in the production control records before proceeding with folding the paper.
Operators- Laminating machines
These operators are responsible for setting up the laminating machines according to specifications in the production control records and for preparing the supplies needed for the laminating (film, solvent, and powder). They are responsible for work execution and the maintenance of the equipment in good working order.
Operators- Thermal binding and Perfect binding machines
Thermal and Perfect binding machine operators are responsible for setting up, operating and maintaining the required equipment (collator, paster and trilateral guillotine). They perform setting adjustments according to specifications kept in the production control records, and they also ensure that the material to be bound is precisely positioned.
Operators- Trimming knives (guillotine, trimmer)
These operators are responsible for setting up the machines according to the format of the documents ready for trimming. They have to keep the knives sharpened and adjust the pressure settings according to the nature and characteristics of the material being cut.
